Formal registration for the meeting, which benefits from the sponsorship generously provided by the organizations listed below, is now closed.  You can still register for the meeting but you will have to find your own accommodation in nearby Ambleside.  There will be shuttle connections between Ambleside and the conference venue (alternatively, it is a 20 minute walk along the lake, weather permitting.). Registration is £400 (because it does not benefit from sponsorship).

Start of the Meeting:

You can pick up badges, abstract booklets and register for the meeting in the Foyer of the Low Wood Hotel from 4pm onwards.  All talks and posters will be at the Low Wood Hotel.  The meeting will start with a Drinks reception at 6pm on Sunday 10th April.

Posters:

Poster Boards will be Velcro cloth boards. We will provide Velcro to attach posters to the boards.

Talks:

Many of the delegates have indicated that they are keen to give a talk.  Many thanks for this enthusiastic response. Regrettably, we have been unable to accommodate everyone’s wishes, but we hope that you will agree that we have managed to create an exciting programme. Please download and check the CONFERENCE PROGRAMME to see whether your abstract has been selected for a presentation.  We apologise profusely to those of you who have not been selected for an oral presentation but we simply could not fit everyone in.  We have, however, tried to allocate as much time as possible for poster viewing to ensure that your work will still reach a large audience.  To include as many talks as possible and yet avoid making the schedule too punishing, there are two categories of selected talks:

20 minutes + 5 minutes for questions.
12 minutes + 3 minutes for questions

If you have been selected for a short talk we strongly encourage you to bring a poster to ensure that you can cover any points in the poster that you are were unable to cover in your talk. We will have a PC and Mac onsite and a switching unit for the projector. You can either bring your talk on a USB memory stick or on your own computer.

The Lake District:

The Lake District is one of the most beautiful areas of un-spoilt countryside in England. It is one of the country’s top destinations for hikers and lovers of the outdoor life – in this respect it is very similar to the Kamikochi region of the Japan Alps . It is so popular in the summer School Holidays that it can be impossible to travel through its tiny villages by car. Do not worry, however, because it will not be so busy in the Spring.

In addition to attractions for hikers, there are other attractions to suit all, ranging from cruises on the lake through to activities focusing upon one of the most famous Lakeland residents, Beatrix Potter, and her creation Peter Rabbit. The key attractions of the region are the numerous lakes that sit between the hills that give the district its natural charm, though this beauty does come at a price because these lakes would not exist without a plentiful supply of rain, so be sure to bring waterproof clothing with you. Although it is unlikely to rain for the entire duration of your stay, you are equally unlikely to spend 4 days in the Lake District without experiencing one or two showers.

The North West of England has many sights to see outside of the Lake District. There are three other beautiful National Parks that are all within easy reach of Manchester and Liverpool:

The Yorkshire Dales
Snowdonia in North Wales
The Peak District (which, despite its name, is a beautiful collection of valleys and rolling countryside).

For those interested in Metropolitan life, the principle cities of Manchester and Liverpool have some key attractions. Lovers of the Beatles will enjoy The Beatles Story attraction and the Magical Mystery Tour. In addition to a vibrant nightlife, Manchester offers a range of activities from a tour of the world famous Manchester United Football Club to a tour around a fully functional working cotton mill, representing one of the driving forces behind the Industrial revolution and the development of the North West, where you can see the technology that first put Manchester and the UK on the industrial map.
